This is the first recording of pianist Igor Levit, conductor Christian Thielemann and the Vienna Philharmonic with Brahms’ two Piano Concertos. The release is a triple-CD album with Levit’s recording of Brahm’s late solo piano works opp 116-119. As a special encore Levit and Thielemann also play the four-hand Brahms Waltz op. 39/15 together. The album will be out internationally on October 4 on Sony Classical. After Igor Levit, Christian Thielemann, and the Vienna Philharmonic performed Brahms’ First Piano Concerto at Vienna’s famous Musikverein in April 2024 the Viennese newspaper The Standard wrote: “During these fifty minutes, an irresistible dose of emotion was conveyed – but at the same time the sophisticated structure of Brahms’ masterpiece remained crystal clear.” Four months earlier after their performance of the Second Piano Concerto, the Austrian newspaper Die Presse had declared that “Igor Levit sets a new gold standard for Brahms.”

The debut album from Nashville country-rocker Jett Holden and first release on the newly-formed Black Opry Records, The Phoenix is a full-circle moment for both the artist and organization. After hitting multiple roadblocks in the music industry, Holden was ready to quit music- until Black Opry founder Holly G found his music online and encouraged him to keep going. See You At The Maypole, the sixth full-length album in Half Waif's prolific catalog, is a recognition of personal sadness, and a call to ecstatic togetherness. It's gathering the colors of our spirit, in all it's shades, and making something intricate and remarkable. The ceremonial folk dance performed around a maypole is filled with fauna and flora, with ribbons woven into complex braids incapable of unraveling; these dances are survivals of ancient ritual, honoring the living trees, and the return of Spring and fertility. These patterns-this dance-cannot be completed alone, and so, Half Waif welcomes others to join her, a collective of bleeding color. "We are so much stronger for the colorful experiences we go through," she says. "That's where we find our humanity and find each other." While the seclusion of grief feels infinite, Rose brought the songs to her trusted friend and longtime collaborator of the past decade, Zubin Hensler. The pair worked away from others for Mythopoetics, carefully crafting each note and flourish themselves but something else was needed for See You At The Maypole. To that end, Hensler and Rose welcomed a wealth of players and friends into the world of the record: Jason Burger and Zack Levine on drums and percussion; Josh Marre (Blue Ranger) on guitar; Hannah Epperson and Elena Moon Park on violin; Kristina Teuschler on clarinet; Willem de Koch on trombone; Rebecca El-Saleh on harp; and Spencer Zahn on upright bass. Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver) lent his deft mixing skills to many of the tracks, including lead single 'Figurine.' "This wasn't just my story, I wanted to say. It was every story of loss-the loss of a life, the loss of a dream, the loss of trust and hope and faith. A story of finding a way back again," Rose explains. "My own avenue back to the land of the living was through my relationships with people and with the natural world. It only seemed right that these songs would invite those people in to build the very heart of the sound."

A Christmas Album was originally released in October 1967.  Barbra Streisand recorded four Christmas songs in London on June 25, 1966 while she was in London performing Funny Girl at the Prince of Wales Theatre.  According to producer Ettore Stratta, Barbra insisted on different interpretations without traditional arrangements for these songs.  Streisand recorded the rest of the album in September 1966 while she was in Hollywood filming the Funny Girl movie.  Of the variety of both secular and religious songs included on the album, the standout track is Barbra’s “new” adaptation of the classic holiday song “Jingle Bells?” with the “?” added by Barbra!  The track captures Barbra’s freewheeling vocal complete with jazzy dramatics.  Upon it’s original release, the album spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard Christmas chart and the album has been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA with sales of more than five million copies in the United States.

 

Long out of print on vinyl, A Christmas Album vinyl configuration is once again available and includes a bonus track: “Gounod’s Ave Maria” (English.)  This track was included on a limited-edition holiday Starbucks sampler which is no longer available. 

Christmas Memories was originally released on October 30, 2001 but was never available on vinyl. And now the vinyl is finally here!
